Greetings from Port Angeles WA!
I've got a Chevy 52 2 ton that I've been using for a manure hauler for 15 years or so. Last October a small fire under the carb turned into a very large one that fried many of the wires and hoses on the right side of the engine compartment. The only way I could put it out was with the manure I had in the bed! It worked but I had to keep stuffing it into the carb and batting it with my gloves to get the fire out! Man was I sweating! It burned hot and melted much of the insulation and wire of the paint off the outside of the hood. I was thinking about giving her up for good but the other day I figured I'd try to bring her back to life and spliced in some new wires and clean up the carb.
It runs, moves and dumps but runs very rough! Here's my question. The carb sounds terrible at idle but will ramp up as I give her the gas. Could I have fried some of the components inside the carb with the fire? What are the chances it is rebuildable and or would I be better off with a new Rocherster B (pretty sure). Someone posted a web site in the forums where I could buy a new Rochester but I lost the link?
Any advice from a few veterans would be greatly appreciated!
