Hi all,

Recently reassembled my foot activated starter & I seem to be missing somthing. When turned on end the starter shaft protrudes through the front houseing causing the armature to fall away from the brushes. I am wondering if there is a clip that should be installed on the shaft in front of the drive assy. but before the front bushing. There is a groove in the shaft but I dont recall a clip there on dissassembly. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Yes, a snap ring goes there. The parts breakdown of the starter actually shows two rings..one where you indicate, and another on the back, or starter side of the drive gear. Do you see a snap ring groove there as well?

They call these snap rings, but as I recall, they are circular rings, but not flat, and they don't have little ears like today's style does.

I don't think a conventional 'snap ring' will work. These are specific for this kind of application.

This ring sometimes ends up buried in a small recess in the end of the starter drive gear.

yup , i believe there is a c-clip or a retainer on the shaft at the end where the shaft goes thru the nose cone.

is'nt it a c-clip with a concave washer that goes over the top , to hold it ?

I might have steered you wrong. There is no snap ring on the back of the drive gear. The item I saw on the front isn't called a snap ring, but is called a spacer. I am really reaching on this, but isn't the shaft turned down on the front, and the snout, or drive housing along with the spacer mechanically hold the armature in the starter.

In the enclosed link, you can see the reduced shaft diameter on the end that goes through the bushing. This is what holds the armature in the starter..isn't it!

I know exactly what ring and concave washer Project 39 is talking about. The starters I have at work for the Perkins diesels have this setup.

Thanks. The washer in question is in place. There is a copper bushing inside the nosecone as well. Should this copper bushing have a cap on it to keep the starter shaft from poking through the houseing?

I thought the end of the shaft had a reduced diameter that fit snugly in the brass bushing. This 'step' is what captures the armature and doesn't allow it to move forward. The washer keeps the drive gear from rubbing on the cast housing as the starter spins. Does your shaft have this step, and is it snug in the bushing?

there is a round retaining clip with a ring that clips over it on the shaft groove...doc

This comes in a 3 piece set. There is a spacer with a recess that goes on first. Then the snap ring goes on & is popped into the recess. Then the thrust washer goes on with the shoulder faceing the snap ring.
