Hello,
I have a 1962 C20 that belonged to my father that I am trying to get runing again. I would like to know how to change it from a generater to run an alternator off of a 63 sence I alredy have one. Could this be done by changing the harness from a 62 to a 63?

Thanks

I think the question that we need answered is...what kind of alternator do you want? You can buy an aftermarket one-wire type that doesn't require but the one heavy battery current wire to keep rewiring to a minimun or one that requires more wires You might visit www.powermastermotorsports.com and see what is offered. They are a little pricey but it will give you an idea which way to go.

Hopefully, you know what kind of vehicle the donor alternator comes from and that it is working. The easiest...not necessarily the best, is the one wire that just dumps back into the battery. Internally or externally regulated are also possibilities. Once you identify the type of regulator you can "search" and find the necessary wiring configuration. Of course you realize, you'll have to modify your mounting bracket.

Most auto parts stores can spin your alternator to verify that it is functioning properly. It would be a shame to get it all installed and find it was no good.

I used a 12v GM unit...internal regulator with a 3 wire + ground hookup on my 54....felt it was a wiser choice than the 1 wire...(Do "search").

There is a bunch of info available on this upgrade and you should be able to find specific info to fit your particular application. Hope this gets you headed in the right direction.

If you have the regulator that came with the 63 you can use that alt. with the regulator. It is easy to modify the wires. Get a wireing diagram. There is lots of info on this from past posts.
