New to the forum and my Stovebolt. Just starting to get the basics done on my titled 50' but more likely a 53? I went to grease her up when I got to the universals I saw grease fittings and grease. The shop manual says don't use chassis grease on these fittings as they are lubrcated from the transmission. If so then why the grease fittings? They were tight to get the gun on but my NAPA gun went on without a real problem. I greased them since they had been obviously grease prior. So the real question is what is the proper thing to do? Do I need to drop them out and clean?
Great forum I've been reading for the past few months, you can rest assured I'll be on here as the project progresses.

Sounds like an open drive-line which, if the u-joints have grease nipples, needs grease.

Someone has done some serious parts swapping. The original final drive would have had an enclosed driveshaft with only one universal right behind the transmission, so if you can see universal joints, the trans, driveline, and rear end has been changed out for something newer.

Thanks Hotrod!

Doesn't surprise me after all these years---- but it does explain why the gearbox and rear end #s don't match anything in the Chevy manuals. I have a 3 speed gearbox with serial # CBJ105999 and a rear end stamped HOA0225. That ring any bells to anyone?
Gearbox has a GM 48 large casting #

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys
