It lasts about a second or two losing volume until stopped -- this could happen 4 or 5 times in a row. It sounds like a starting motor/solinoid problem but other times it fires up with the first turn of key.
How can I check to find cause of problem?

Your diagnosis is probably correct. If you value your time, a new or rebuilt starter would be the best plan. Dinking around with a problem starter, or trying to fix it a piece at a time is a real drag. Replace it and be done with it.

If you like to fix things yourself you can o-haul it yourself. They aren,t that hard to do. If not buy a rebuilt starter-seleniod .

Sounds like the starter/solinoid are on their way out. Time to replace them. Later when I have nothing better to do (when will that be?) I'll take the old one apart just to get familiar with what it's made up of and maybe rebuild it. It can go on the spare parts shelf either repaired or waiting to be. | | |
