when starting 283 it turns over and getting a backfire from engine and fire shooting up from carb. Then mini fire in carb until I fan it out - quickly. Seems to be too much fuel. Any ideas...don't want to torch my truck.

Does sound like some spark plug wires are crossed, or out of time.

1-8-4=3-6-5-7-2 in that order. It's not timed right.

Remember the distributor turns clockwise when viewed from the top, and check inside the distributor cap for a carbon track that lets the spark crossfire from one wire terminal to another. Chevy V8 firing order is like a girlfriend:

18 - - - -too young
43-65- - -just right
72- - - -too old!

LOL!

All the above are good suggestions, one more for you.Timing chain.chev sb use a nylon toothed cam gear, very common to have them wear and jump a tooth.Easy to check, remove dist cap, hand rotate eng clockwise till rotor moves, then rotate eng counter clock wise. If eng turns any significant amount before rotor turns you have timing chain issues.crank and dist should turn together at the same time. Also set timing mark on dampner to TDC no 1 cyl and dist rotor should point to no1 wire on cap.if timing chain has been done before and is a steel cam gear or a roller setuo then this isnt the problem.

"Backfiring through the carb" tells me the distributor is 180 degrees off.
