The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline steering binding question

46 1/2 ton PU. After insuring there was enough lube in the steering box I adjusted the bearings and gear lash as per the Chev. manual and some posts in this forum. Then checked king pin , tie rod and draglink for lube and smoothness of travel, weight off wheels.
All seems to move smooth with no binding. The steering box adjusted well with little lumpiness or binding. The steering still will not return to center in a right turn. Left turns seem to be fine.
Any ideas appreciated. Time to rebuild the box ?

Hy scgck, check to make sure the steering stop is in place for the right turn, also the front axle may need more caster to help it return. Worst case scenario the axle is twisted and has enough caster for left turn return, but not enough for right turn return, any good alignment shop should be able to check and adjust your front axle alignment and inform you of any problems, hope that helps.

If the axle is twisted, which is what I suspect as well, you may need to replace it or possible find a shop that can straighten it. Not many alignment shops do work with bending (camber adjustment) or straightening I beam axles anymore, especially not shops that only work with passenger cars and light trucks.
