what would cause the brush retaining spring on the field side terminal to melt? everything is fine for the first five to ten minutes and then something just goes south. very frustrating!
this is just another chapter in the continuing saga of 6 volt pergatory that i have been going through with my charging system. what should i do? i really want to stay with the 6 volt system so do i just shelve the existing generator and take the plunge and buy one from jim carter or some other source that will probably cost me an arm and a leg?
getting to the end of my rope. any advice welcomed! | | |

Since it melted the bracket the short is pretty close to that area. Insure that the mounting bracket is grounded/not grounded properly, check wiring diagram. The path of curent seems to have went thru the brush holder and not the brush it self. Sometimes when this amount of heat occurs the wire solder is melted away from the brush. Replace the brushes. I get mine from a local company that sells tractor parts, same brush and a lot chepper that vendors. Good luck and keep us posted | | |

A full field output test on these generators involves grounding the field wire temporarily. I wonder if your external wiring could have a break or worn spot in it that was grounding and telling the generator to go nuts. I would think you would see any generator output on your ammeter if this were the case. Maybe you could inspect all your generator to regulator wiring for defects, replace both brush holder springs with new ones and give the thing another try. This is a great learning experience, too bad it has to be at your expense. Stuart | | |

Any thing above regulator will be protected by regulator relays, if field contact is closed to ground direct short.If solder is bad in wire/brush, short goes thru brush holder/ spring, easy path of curent to ground 40+ amps, burn.. I think problem is in generator.Just my input, err-aa/output. | | |
