I can't swear to it, but a previous post which I have linked gives a answer.
No damage will be done hooking it either way. One way will read correctly, and the other incorrectly. The correct connection will make the gauge peg to full when ONLY the power wire is attached and energized...this means leave the wiring going to the sender OFF the gauge.

Are you installing a new 12 gauge? I believe the six volt gauge only lasts nanoseconds without a resistor in series with the switched 12 volt power.  Stuart | | |
#99178 02/09/2007 2:32 PM | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 297 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 297 | the earlier post is correct - looking from the back of the gauge the "hot" from the switch goes on the right post which is the "empty" side and the "sender" wire goes on the left (full side). as automarc said, make sure you have a vt.reducer between the swith and "hot" post if it is a 6v gauge.

yes I have a 12 volt gauge and a 30ohm sender.

I installed the gauge and gauge unit with new wiring and gronded the tank unit, followed your instuctions on the wire locations and turned on the key THE GAUGE DID NOT WORK. After trouble shooting the gauge and sending unit I find that when I assembled the gauge cluster the the inside plate over the gauges was bent and pressing on the fuel gauge needle..Ha HA Ha the joke is on me.
I wonder how many other stovebolters had this happen.
