Does anybody know why I couldn't run a throttle body injection upside down?

I'm dealing with a COE so I'm stuck with an updraft carb situation. I really want to keep it a Six. I'm going to rebuild the motor , it's a 1955 235 inline and I'd like to get some more beans out of it. Nothing radical, still a truck motor, but a little more compression, little more cam, a little head work, split manifold and why not an upside down TBI or two?

Let me know your thoughts, if you know why it won't work, you could save me some aggravation.

Thanks,
Greg

Why not rig a 90 degree elbow to the stock intake, and mount the TBI vertical instead of upside down? Of course, you'll need the full complement of sensors and an ECM to match the throttle body, wire harness, etc. but that can all be scavenged from a suitable donor vehicle. Since you'll be making an adapter any way you go, try a 2-injector TBI from a GM 3.8L V6. It should flow plenty of air volume without having to deal with the hassle of synchronizing two single-barrel TBI units.

I was reading about how the injectors are designed to handle vaporized fuel to avoid vapor lock. Something about a channel that allows the heavier liquid fuel to sink, forcing the vapor up a channel and back into the return line. Seems as long as it doesn't get heat soaked, this wouldn't be a problem. I'm looking for TBI parts myself right now. Trying to source from craigslist, paper and friends. Looking tommorrow at junkyards. Good luck with yours. Jim

interesting... I wonder if

"Something about a channel that allows the heavier liquid fuel to sink"

works off of gravity.

If so, that might mean upside down won't work

Thanks,
Greg

Yeh, that's why I mentioned it . I don't have any experience with TBI, just been reading a lot trying to learn. Hope to find parts soon. Patricks doesn't have the GMC 4 barrel manifold, so looks like I'll be building my own. As soon as my new dual Fenton exhaust gets here, will start pulling stuff apart. Jim

Don't think a tbi will work on it side to well. I bought a 91 astro van and took the tbi system off and put it on a 261 in my 55 cameo. used 4bb intake and tbi adapter. stock program in ecm. just put 305 ci. in place of 4.3 injectors. Port injection would be the way to go. The air throttle body could be on it,s side..

Talk to BillUSN1 at Hamilton Fuel Injection on BinderPlanet.com. He knows his stuff and can probably recommend something. Lots of info on his sight for TBI. Good luck again. Jim

some fella told me about an engine management system, AEM. that you can use to control even sequential fuel injection, which I want to do on my next engine. And yes Talk to that fella @ binder planet, There is about 35 pages of thread from him on this subject here somewhere. All quite interesting
