I am trying to locate a pinion seal and axle seals/bearings for the 2 speed rear end in 1951 Chevrolet 6400. There are no listings and even Napa doesn't have a book anymore to find part numbers. Does anyone have a reference to these part numbers? I am trying to have this stuff on hand rather than tear it apart and try to find them after the fact. Thanks!

Finding bearings and seals for old equipment is usually really easy if you stop thinking of them as a (in this case) Chevy part. Manufactures don't make their own bearings.

I just did a '48 2 speed rear.

Every roller, ball, needle etc. bearing has a number stamped into them. The same with lip seals.

Take the numbers off the bearings (and races if they are separate)and seals and go to your local bearing supplier. If they don't have them on the shelf they will get them in a few days.

You can also order on line if you want to wait for shipping.

I just found a hub seal for my COE by searching the number on the old one. Found it on Rock Auto for $3.00!! Bad part is it was a closeout. I bought all the bearings and races for my '59 GMc frt end from a industrial bearing supply house.

Hy bigblack'74, welcome, could you confirm which differential is in your truck? My truck salesmans data book shows the optional two speed rear axle as the Timken double reduction unit. It has been 62 years since this truck left the factory, and many changes could have been made since it left. To start with the Timken was a vacuum shift rear end, is that the case now?

Thank you. Yes my '51 is a vacuum shift rear end.

The numbers stamped on the top of the 3rd member are as follows:

A7N430 6.13 8.10 M13 51 1.

The ratios are obviously 6.13 and 8.10. I assume 51 1 is January 1951. I do not know what the others mean. I cannot find any listings anywhere for a Timken-Detroit axle.

Hy bigblack74, could you take a picture of the rear axle from under the forward side of it, and post it here. I would just like to confirm which rear end is there before I recommend which parts to order.

Another option if all else fails, Try not to tear them up too bad and take the old seals and bearings to a bearing & seal company, such as Motion Ind. If the old numbers are gone or not able to cross reference, they can mike them and come up with seals and bearings that will replace yours.
When working on the old 2 cyl. John Deeres, I have had certain applications where the seal co. would recommend using 2 seals side by side. A double seal.

That is fantastic. Thank you very very much. I can now get the parts before I tear into it. Do you have a listing for the Universal Joints?

That is the 2 speed I just rebuilt.
Got all the bearings and seals at my local bearing shop, Capeway Bearing.

Any numbers they couldn't match over the phone I brought the parts with me and they matched them by dimension.

I haven't looked them up, but there MAY be a typo in the middle of the list

45920 and 49585 - possibly 45985?

Hy bigblack'74, I added the bull gear shaft bearings to the list this morning (I missed transferring them from my note pad to the confusilator screen). The "U" joints should be Napa p/n PUJ331 $14.85. I checked the number that Jim Sears was wondering if it may be a typo, and it comes out as I posted it in two different catalogs, I also found another bearing number for the intermediate shaft that I will place in the original post, so that all the info is in one post, hope that helps.

I got the pinion seal/speedi-sleeve and bearing changed. The nut had to be torched off. It is a 1" x 20 tpi, if anyone needs to know. Thanks for all the info. I will next do the axle seals.
