hey guys could use some help with this one. I have a 1964 chevy truck with factory tach and guages. I recently installed a new motor with a msd distributor, msd 6a box, and i called msd to figure out how to hook my tach, and i have gotten like three different answers. I even bought the tach adapter #8920, still no luck. The tach worked before this now it barley moves. anybody know how to hook this up all my wiring is brand new. i haven't hacked anything up, and i don't want to. My tach is the later style doesn't require the SUN transmiter. please let me know thank you

IS the dizzy a points triggered or magnetic sensor (hall effect)? If I remember right (rare occurance more & more tho) the older tachometers needed the solid hit from a points trigger to run correctly, whereas the hall effect signals are much weaker & lower voltage, not a good thing for the old tachs.

I'd hit up a couple of the companies that rebuild old stock gauges & ask them about having the guts converted to a modern solid state setup that can use the low voltage signal. That or try to find another stock tach, buy a new tach, & see what you can hammer together yourself. Takes some creativity, but can be done.

I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

I dunno, but my experience echoes yours-I bought a used tach cluster for my 64, the tach seemed very slow at first, then quit altogether. Not sure whether it was due to the HEI or just moivng again after many years of non-use. Brian
