i need a carb for 1949 chevy 235 as the engine didnt
come with one (it does have the spacer on manifold)
what should i look for on ebay ???

I think the carburetors were identical from 1947 to 1953. One barrel Rochester. I will check and see if I have one, today. If I do, it will be in very good condition. I have six or seven. Just need to check the parts book. Hold off on buying one through Ebay. There is one listed for $450.00 and it is polished to gorgeous. I will be in the garage today, and will let you know by tomorrow morning if I have one. If I do have one, I will ask for a very lot less. My spouse wants the parts load reduced in the garage. I do not have a spacer for underneath it.

1. It depends on what you mean by "proper" - original, or any carb that will fit
2. Someone might know if the Canadian carburetor was the same as the USA carburetor

3. The USA 216/235 Carter carburetors are listed here. It looks like the same model downdraft carburetor was used on all engines.

The light duty trucks came with a 216 engine. The original carb would be a Carter W-1. 50 up went to the Roch. model B. If you have a latter 235 engine or 235 manifolds it will be the model B with a larger bore carb. Measure the mounting stud distance. If it is 2 15/16 center to center then you have a 235. You will need to find a carb for 54-59. You can use one from a 60-67 but it has a different air cleaner mounting & fuel inlet line. If it has 2 5/8 centers it is a 216 manifold & you need a W-1 to be original or a model B to be "proper".

I think that you want a 49 Chevy W1 Carter carb (manual choke. I checked my garage. Mine are all Rochesters of a later vintage. Sorry I could not help.

I have several rochester B carbs that I'm not using if you want to try one. What is your bolt spacing? If needed we could even make sure it ran on one of my engines before you take it. Let me know. Dave

check the very back of the 48-51 shop manual with the 52/53 update there is something about swapping the original carbs for rochester b's. they list the numbers.
