For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 36 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 36 | Hell guys, I just picked up a nice 41 pickup with a 216. My question is about the putting the temp probe in the head. I've talked with a fellow who sent me some pics of his probe in the head but mine will fall right though the hole. His engine is a 41 and I looked up mine and it's dated 1940. Did they use a adapter when they put the probe in a 1940 head? I don't believe I can just throw a pipe reducer in there because I think the sensor has machine threads and not pipe threads on it.
Thanks for the help. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | Tom I am not sure about the years they fit but several of the vendors like Jim Carter and Classic Parts sell this adaptor. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | The sender reducer/adapter that Brad refers to works in later 235/261 heads that were made for an electrical sender that had a wider diameter than the mechanical/tube sender (sometime after 55-1st). Presumably, you are referring to a 1940 216 head and 1941 216/235 head? Maybe that hole changed when the 235 was introduced? That reducer might work in an earlier 216/235? It was available at NAPA - I'll look for the part number.

What year is the engine? You do not want to use a 1940 head on a 1941 or later engine. 1940 was the last year to use dome pistons. If you use a 1940 head on a 1941 or later engine you will have very low compression.
