Can anyone offer any web sites, or suggestions, on what the original engine paint color was - and also the oil canister filter? Thanks.

The Filling Station. Probably have to copy and past this link:
http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000014a~Z5Z5Z52217~P19.50~~~~S3X711ACNX50451016850x~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000014x

The engine and engine sheet metal was dark gray.
Pat Doonan from D&D Auto Parts has posted a very complete piece
on the GM oil filters in the TechTips section:

Some say that the Filling Station color is too dark. I could be talked into that it isn't dark enough, or maybe too glossy. I have seen a very original fire truck years ago and it was very clean and looked more like light black than dark gray. I still kick myself for not buying it, 30 years later.

Hirsch has been a good source for me. You can get it in high temp spray cans or in bulk to use your air gun with.

I hate to keep rehashing this over and over, in the end it's
paint it what ever you feel like in spite of what the facts dictat.
I'd agree with you 100% Carl. All of the paint samples left on
any of the engine sheet metal that I've found have been a very
dark gray. Much darker than any of the other paint
that the vendors offer. The Filling Station comes
the closest.
I did a bunch of comparison some time ago.

You can clearly see how light the Hirsch paint is next to the
other. Some guys use the lighter yet Ford gray but that is even
lighter than Bill Hirsch's paint. Also many of the
guys over at the VCCA seem to agree that the engines
were painted a very dark blue gray.

I recommend Hirsch auto paint, went on nicely with a good quality brush on the block, looks great, and they are nice folks to deal with. I used the Medium Chevy grey. Call them up and tell them the color you want, or check them out online. Mike
