I want to convert from a manual to an automatic.I have a 292.Will a later model automatic tranny bolt up to the 292? And will a flywheel from a 250 fit my 292? Or do I have to go with a newer 250 and auto tranny? The 292 runs great and I'd like to keep it if I can get away with it.Any suggestions folks!

From what I understand, the 292 has a standard Chevy bellhousing pattern, so you should be able to bolt up newer automatic tranny's. Also, the crankshaft for a manual tranny has two dowel pins, one of which you will need to remove. Also, you will need to drill your flexplate for 1/2 in bolts.
Not too much modification for the upgrade.
I'm not sure bout your other question.

Hi there '63 FK & 62 CS(Bo)

The Magazine Classic Trucks May '98 isssue has an excellent article by Doc Frohmader on this topic. Frohmader bolts up a TH-700R4 to a 292 no problem at all. Frohmader makes the same point as Bo, the 292 has the same bellhousing as the V8's

This is article 11 in an 18 part series in which Frohmader rods up a 63 short bed fleetside.

I am in the process of copying several of the articles for Bo (62 CS)- if you'd like I'll make an extra copy of this one for you too.

I see that you both live in California - don't you know each other? wink

Thanks 62 chevy stepside and Prairie Sailor.Do either of you know what flexplate I should use? Would a 250 straight six flexplate work as long as I redrill the bolt holes and remove the dowel pins as you suggest? Would I have to go with a starter from an automatic straight six also to get the right match also? Prairie Sailor I definately would appreciate a copy of that article too.

Goodmorning all,
I think the 250 flexplate would work, though in the Classic Truck article Prairie Sailor is talking about they used a small block unit.

I have that article Prairie Sailor, and I could get that to 63 if you like? Might save you a bit of postage and trees! Let me know.

This article would probably be worth waiting for 63. It will give you a good idea what your getting into.

Take care,
Bo

Hey Bo,
I've made the copies that you require of the 18 article series. Now all I need is your address. See my private message to you on this board or my earlier direct e-mail.

Please send your address privately - I wouldn't post publicly on this board.

I know that this is a very old thread, but the subject fits my project perfectly. I am in the process of putting together a 292/700r4 combination for my 41 GMC 3/4 ton. In this thread, a reference is made to an article in the May 1998 issue of Classic Trucks Magazine that describes this installation in detail. Does anyone on this board still have a copy of that article, and would you mind making a copy and sending it to me? I would be more than happy to reimburse you for your expenses and inconvenience.

Thanks,
Tim Slesak
