I've been reading a lot of posts about IFS's with power steering, but haven't seen any posts about setting up power steering on a stock stright axle. I've tried to make friends with the search function, but not finding what i'm after.
Has anyone done a tech thread about installing PS on a stock axle? What problems were encountered? Is a rack & pinion steering even possible on a stright axle?
I would like to consider a PS option on my 1950 Panel and use GM parts.
Does anyone have any links to good, detailed threads on this subject?
Thanks,
Mike

Either style, who has done what and what was the outcome? No frame clips or MMII crossmembers or other types of crossmember swaps, just those who have added some form of PS to their stright axle pickups and panel trucks.
Does anyone have a build thread about their truck showing how they added PS?
Thanks,
Mike

I would look at power assisted steering kit which does not require mods or replacing the steering column ...ck The Filling Station catalog for this. I don't have it yet but am considering it

CPP makes a kit, or use a combination of parts. Toyota steering box in stock location with GM pump. Buffalo enterprises makes a double pulley damper and pump mount. This allows the use of stock steering column. I did this 5000 miles ago and I'm very happy.

Bob,
Did you install power steering alone, or with AC as well?

I installed over size tires and wheels so improving the steering was most important.
No, I didn't install power steering? Buffalo enterprises will answer any questions you might have.

Bob,
I assume you meant no AC. I have the complete Buffalo bracket set with balancer. Based on your experience, it sounds like you can install power steering stand alone. Or do first, then add the AC later. I think that is a useful point to make for Mike, the OP.
Do you have any pix of the install that you can share?

Did you remount the original column in the stock location, or shorten it to make more room in the cab? Another useful data point for the record.

Steve at Buffalo is a helpful guy, but he doesn't publish much. I try not to bother him too much, because while he's on the phone with me somebody's parts are not getting built.

He needs an intern to learn everything he knows, write it down, take pictures, and publish the "History and Practices of Buffalo Enterprises"

Leon

I see the mistake. Yes, only power steering. I can't add anything about AC. I cut my steering column and used a CPP coupling joint. Since I installed a T-5 earlier, I didn't have any shifter problems to deal with.

I have a 51 1/2 ton panel with a 455 Buick in it.

I used the CPP stock axle PS kit in it's entirety along with their disc brakes, firewall mount master booster, the one inch tie rod and upgraded ends, & the 1 1/8 inch front sway bar kit. Very happy with the outcome…steers like a 60s Caddy and stops great.
I used a 33 inch aftermarket column shift tilt column, too.

Also, put a Rancho steering stabilizer on the axle just for good measure. 600 miles and all works well so far.
