Anyone got a pic or schematic for the bottom reinforcing bracket for a AD 3/4 ton side tire carrier? Apparently it goes under the box to reinforce the side.

Any info appreciated.

I think I have one for a 1/2 ton. If I get a chance, I'll check the Factory Assembly Manual and Master Parts Book to see if the 3/4 and 1/2 ton reinforcing bars/brackets are the same (there might also be differences for 16" vs 15" wheels/tires).

Also, the side-carrier was available in 1953 (it would also fit earlier A-D years' beds) and in 1954/55 (different bed sides than in 1953). I do not know if that part is the same for both assemblies?

I got an original 53 3/4 side carrier from the board here but it needs quite a bit of work and I am looking at buying another. It looks like the only difference on the main carrier is that the angle iron supports are slanted at the top for the 53 box rails.

I believe it is the same carrier for 15 and 16 inch, it's just mounted differently.

I do not have time to study this now, but there are four different sizes of side rails probably having something to do with truck sizes and/or tire sizes.
[added later: 2 sizes for 53 and two sizes for 54/55st - either two sizes each year for different sizes of trucks and/or for different sizes of wheels?]

If someone finds the bottom bracket/brace (that goes on the inside of the bottom bed-side) in the MP&AC, post that info, please. Otherwise, I'll look it up this evening.

There might also be info in the Factory Assembly Manual and/or on Jim Carter's website (he has a Tech Article on the side carrier, but mixes information from 1954, 1955st, and early Task Force carriers).

Tim ..I saw the Jim Carter tech pics and they both appear to be for TF pickups - I've got one of each of those carriers. The 1/2 ton TF side carrier has one arm actually go through a hole in the fender.

Now I noteice I missing the bottom reinforcing bracket for my TF carrier as well..looks fairly easy to fab up tho.

Interesting on the spring spacer. Neat idea. I wonder how thick it was.

But taint seen anything solid. I'm unaware of any thing other
than the two side angles and the main carrier bracket that are

By the way, this is off a '53, 3/4 ton GMC but I'm sure it
would be the same as the 3600 Chevrolet.
Tim, I think the two different pairs of bracket rails listed in
the parts book would be for the light duty truck tire and the
larger 3/4 or 1 ton.

Brad I think that is it. They mention the bracket in the second Jim Carter PDF (for the 3200 and up) but more detail is on page 4 which is not included as a pdf link.

I'm guessing that is the bracket (at least it looks like a bracket) partially referred to in the right hand side of the second pic on this link:

You failed to mention the year of truck you need this info. on mapes.

The 1953 inside the bed side reinforcement bracket is the same for 1/2 , 3/4 and 1 ton models {pictured}.
Very rarely do you see them when you do find a carrier.

The last '54-'55.1 side bracket I ran across had a simple flat piece of strap as the reinforcement bracket.

I'm not wanting to derail this thread, but, where did the spare tire go on the TF trucks if they weren't on the side of the bed? I've seen photos of trucks that don't have "notch" in fender on drivers side. Mine has notch but no bracket and when I redo the box I'd like the full fender and not sure about spare tire mounting options.

Randy, the standard TF spare was under the rear of the bed, the bedside spare setup was an option .... folks would likely pay well for your notched fender

If you are interested, the four different rail brackets in 1954/55 are used with different 3104 truck tires, and the same four different rail brackets are also used with different 3604/3804 truck tires.

There are multiple holes in the rails, allowing the "cage" braces to be located such that different size tires can fit when mounted.

Looks like that support bracket can be easily fabbed up.

If this link works, it will have photos of the 54/55 1/2 ton truck bracket.

From the looks of the bracket, I'd bet is is an original GM part.

I will post a pic next week. I have an original 55 1 that is a U Channel with a stiffener strip. Looks much different than the black one with cut out and L shapped in a previous response above. The unit I have is tough to find because few are removed with the carrier. Next spring when ready, I'm having a reproduction made for myself and one extra for a future truck. It's expensive but just like the Unison Seat brackets I had made, the bracket will be correct. My seat brackets were correct in every way including radii except but made from thicker gage. I plan on the exact gage for the stiffener.

Which post above shows that black one? OK, Denny's, I suppose.

Brad's bracket is different in shape than the brackets shown by simplex and me.
