I have a 1953 3100. I am in the process of swapping out to an S10 frame (locating body mounts now). What are the major changes needed to install CSB 327ci? Will the oil pan clear after installing the motor mount conversion kit? First timeer for me so all help/advise is welcomed. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 | First, don't expect the V8 conversion motor mounts for an S-10 to put the engine in the right spot for your truck, because the S-10 cabs (and therefore firewall) are located much differently than your 53 cab will be. When we do these swaps it's always easier to get the engine mounted first and then mount the cab, but to each their own.
You may find that the engine is in the right location with the 4.3 mounts on the engine, or you may need to move it back a bit. The conversion mounts for an S-10 won't put it in the right spot though.
Take lots of measurements. You may need to make your own mounts to move the motor back with some flat plate or something similar.
My dad's 52 has a 454 and uses the stock 4.3 mounts (same as SBC and BBC) in the factory S-10 location. His firewall is uncut. However, yours may be different based on where your cab is located.
The biggest changes to install the 327 are figuring out where it's mounted, fabbing the transmission crossmember, and getting the driveshaft figured out. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 7 | What shape is the 53 frame in? I would be interested in it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,875 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,875 | It's fairly simple for a reasonably talented wood butcher to fabricate a plywood mockup of the small block engine and use it for trial fitting of mounting points. It's a lot simpler to handle a 20-lb. wooden "block" than even a bare engine block and heads for fabrication purposes. Jerry

I don't know what you would do with it when you were done, or even how much it would cost. But if you are going this far on a project a couple of hundred dollars is mostly inconsequential. | | | | | Joined: May 2013 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2013 Posts: 66 | They're EXTREMELY OVER PRICED..
If you're hard up, get some chicken wire and make a 'form' that gives you the dims of a small block. (Usually 27-28" cubed)
