It only has 80K miles on it. According to the info I can find on line these engines are based on the Chevy and GMC engines and were built under license from GM. They have a high nickle content block and this one is carbureted so no computer issues.It's 4.2 L displacement. Has anyone used this engine in an AD Chevy pickup? It appears that they copied the 235 which was being replaced by the next series GM engines. Nothing fits from the 235 (or any other GM engine) to the 2F. I have worked on a few of them and they are OK. However, I would sell the engine to a Toyota guy and buy a GM engine. Fred

| | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 940 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 940 | The original early '50s F series Toyota engine was loosely based on the 216/235. The differences between the F ('55-'74) and 2F ('75-'88) are essentially the same as the differences between the 216 and 235.
From Wikipedia... The F engine block, crankshaft and lower end assembly is loosely based on the 1939-63 G.M.C. L6 OHV 235 engine but with a taller deck (rather than the similar but smaller Chevrolet 1937-63 Gen-2 216 L6 OHV engine), and built under license. The cylinder head and combustion chamber is derived from the Chevrolet L6 OHV "stovebolt" engine, slightly scaled up. The general idea was consumers would feel comfortable with the engine since it was a familiar design and had a proven track record. None of the bottom end of the engine is interchangeable with these engines.
Type B was produced from 1937 through 1955 as a more technically advanced version of the Type A. The design was based on the Chevrolet 207 engine, and built under license but with metric dimensions and minor revisions to suit the local market. It had a four-bearing crank and shaft-mounted rocker arms, as did the Chevrolet engine. The Type B was succeeded by the similar 3.9 L Type F in 1955. The Type F is based on the larger G.M.C. 1939-63 L6 OHV engine in the same way that the Type A and Type B were based on the Chevrolet engines of their times. | | | | | Joined: May 2013 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2013 Posts: 20 | rfs56trk, I think its probable that the engines were built under licence. GM was phasing out the stovebolt, they didn't see Toyota as competition (foolish boys) and saw an opportunity to continue to make money on an old design. As far as engines goes I really don't need to BUY any more. I have the 216 that is in the truck now, a 235 dipper engine, a solid lifter 235, a hydraulic lifter 235 and the 228 that's in the LWB GMC chassis. In addition I also have a 230 in peices, a 283 block, crank and camel back heads, AND an odd fire Buick V6. All of these engines will require a complete overhaul if I use them, the Toy engine is good to go as is. I'm also NOT hide bound about keeping the truck all GM. Once my neighbor Bill gets back from his hunting trip I'll go over and get it and see how it fits the GMC chassis and make my decision. I'll let you all know how well (or not) it fits. Only thing bad about using the Toy engine is that I haven't found an adapter plate to mount an automatic trans to it yet. As far as selling it to the Toyota folks????? The popular engines to put into Land Cruisers seem to the ubiquitous SBC and Cummins 4BT conversions. My understanding is that the bottom end is based on the GMC and the head is based on the better breathing 235 Chevy design stretched to fit the GMC block. Of course it's all metric so none of the parts interchange with GMC or Chevy. The block is also a high nickle content that adds to longevity and I like longevity. I've also heard that the head is 12 port but don't know that for a fact. According to Wicki the 2F has full flow oil filtration were the F does not. The last version, 3F, had fuel injection. Almsot avery one of them gets the facts about the Chevrolet and GMC engines wrong, especially as to who made what displacement, and in one case, listed a Buick V6 displacement as the Chevrolet inline 6 displacement. Looking at the engines themselves, I see very little in common with the Chevrolet, other than the fact that they are both inline 6 engines and both have 4 main bearings. The Toyota looks more to have been copied completely from the GMC, the oiling system is similar, and head is an almost spot on match other than the port layout(look at the chamber and valve layout, it does not match the Chevy at all). As far as being "built under license", that could be anyones guess. I do know that Toyota got their start in the auto business importing Buicks to Japan in the '20s, so it is possible. Also, GM and Toyota have had a long standing working relationship until just a few years ago.

AMC engines are also similar with the exception of their weird intake/exhaust manifolds. The point is that any of these engines could have been developed as direct competition to the long successful GM engines. It's a well known fact that Ford and Chrysler developed small block V-8's in the 60's to compete with the 283/327 Chevy's. It's your truck, put anything in that you want. Personally if I was going to do that much work I would install a small block Chevy. There are still some Toyota purists out there and I have worked on their FJ40's as well as some with 350's in them. Individualism is what keeps the tuck hobby alive. Fred
