I have been wanting to put together a system for pulling my tilt top trailer with my 56 when completed but the trailer has air brakes and the truck hydraulic.
I have now found what I need to build the required system to do just that Micro valve company makes a hydraulic over air relay valve that takes a pilot signal from a hydraulic brake system and delivers proportional air pressure from a compressed air supply to control air brakes on a trailer.
I will be using one of these valves and putting together a full system the truck will retain its hydraulic system there will be a single valve on the dash to charge the trailer brake system an ARB electric compressor and tank for air. The system will work for the trailer just as if the truck had air brakes. Just thought I would let you all know that there is a valve for this specific purpose. I will happy to show how it all goes together for anyone here who is interested.

Sounds like a plan.

Did you consider making the truck air over hydraulic brakes and then the air trailer brake is simpler to do? You'd then what an engine driven compressor though, you may still want one with the current plan.

Yes in fact if I hadn't already put so much into the hydraulic system I would have gone full air.
This hydraulic over air valve makes it pretty easy though actually easier than the full conversion.
The valve and some plumbing makes up the entire service side of the system. The control valve in the cab a standard relay valve and plumbing will make up the supply or emergency side as long as the system is not braking the prime mover the compressor can be electicly driven no engine driven compressor required.
It is how they are equipping hot shot trucks to tow air brake trailers.

I could add a spring brake can to the hand operated e-brake and a truck valve to the cab and have the parking brake operate as if the truck had full air,but then the compressor would have to run even when not pulling a trailer.
