I did post in paint/body close to a week ago, really need a measurement from someone that has their glass out of a 1 piece windshield 54/55 1st series.. My roof was extended and I need to bring it back to spec..

If someone could tell me the distance at the center of the roof, from the back edge of the rear windows upper pinch weld to the front edge of the windshields upper pinch weld (the ones that slot into the glass rubbers) this would tell me how much I need to remove from the roof panel..

This roof was cut left to right and about 4" added for a movie shoot, can't tell exactly how much though..

Thanks in advance!

OK...Well I went out and measured my 54 Chevy made in Canada parts truck and I got exactly 38 1/8". This was from outside of front to outside of back exactly in the middle of the roof. If you need anything else email [email protected] Hope this helps you.

That's excellent Canuck49! That is exactly what I needed and is good news. That means they used hack saw and not a nibbler to extend my roof and I just need to bring the original edges back to welding width and no filler strip..

Thanks again!
ps. truck was used in a Sesame Street movie, cab was raised 11" and roof extended (as I now find) 2 3/8" to clear Big Birds head and beak smile

I always admired that truck. I think it's a shame to re-modify it.

Can't actually be certified the way it is.. Looked good in movie, in real life door frames are all putty (no structure nor window channels or operable windows) windshield is 1/16" plexi held in with pop rivets, over 3/4 of frame was cut out under cab on Big Birds side (reason bumper is crooked in movie, frame bent under floor so pointed up at bumper) and roof was extended front to back using furnace duct sheet. Not a thing was welded, all just spot brazed.. Putty on back of cab turned out to be 1.5" thick where they added the 11" extension..

We will probably stay same blue, keeping the sticker in the rear window visible in the movie and while it'll be a step side, will probably add a small wood stake set.

It is looking mighty sad. I think you'd be better off to find a different cab.

I'd be better off if time was a factor, cost wasn't and 54/55 cabs were around every 2nd corner smile But then I couldn't really call it Big Bird when it was done could I? Lots of time, wanted a project, is what it is and will get done.

I'm envious of some of you US guys seeing how readily used parts are available in some areas down there.. Right now in all of Ontario there is 1 suitable cab for sale, it's 12hrs from me and from the pictures is more work and time than this one. Got all winter to prep cab and front clip.. I have A pillars and door frames on their way..

No mater what kind of project I take on, it isn't how quickly or easily I did it, for me simply 'I did it' is my target..

Greg
