Got tired of shuffling the cans around to get to the
one in the back of the 18" deep shelves so I made a
couple of these shelves from some 2x8's that I had
in the shop.
Now I can see all the tops of all the cans at a glance.

Denny,

What is the shelf life on those cans of paint?
Unopened/unused?
Opened and partially used?

How do you clean the nozzles after use (or, do you use a new nozzle for each use)?

Thanks,

Not sure Tim, some of those cans are from my move to the airport
in '85 and they still spray, I run into a dud every once in a
while. After each use I flush the nozzles with a the tube on a
can of brake cleaner, the inside of the nozzles fit right over
the tubes.
Had a whole pile of 2x8 eight footers that the previous owner
left me last year Bill. Routed a 1/2" deep dado for the shelves
and it gives me a real sturdy shelf unit.
And Bill, you know how anal I get about getting just the right
color for my restoration projects, so when I need brown I pick
up every shade of brown I can find, or white or black or what
ever. For instance, you got gloss blacks, flat blacks, semi-
gloss blacks, chassis blacks, radiator black, chalkboard black,
black lacquer, high-temp blacks, you get the picture. Don't
even get me started on the proper engine gray. Multiply that by
all the basic colors and the fact that I buy paint for the
radio restorations and you can see where it all comes from,
very few duplicates.
But, these shelves don't have a very big foot print, they're
attached to the back and end cap of a larger 24x24 shelf used
for Rubbermaid containers and again, they free up the 18x36
All-Steel shelf unit I had in the barn for bigger things.

Denny,

You have inspired me. I have a shelf of rattle cans. Cases of the colors I use regularly, but then the menegiere of colors that one will accumulate. And they are just stuffed one in front of the other on the shelf. This may help to simplify the process. Just have to remember to hang onto the lids.

I keep all of my rattle cans in an overflowing box on the floor so I can continuously maintain my cat-like agility, avoiding tripping over the mostly empty, clogged nozzled stale paint cans. Hello, my name is Carl and I am a hoarder. I'm not on that TV show yet since my wife won't let me in the house anymore.

Oh, that's just what I have John, to much time on my hands. 6.5
acres to mow and spray, dozens of oak, hickory and maple trees
to tend to. Over 1,000 feet of overgrown privet hedge to keep
trimmed, nearly 100 bushes and plantings that need trimming
around the house. 400 foot of gutter around the house and barn
that need cleaning a few times a year. 2600 sq.ft. of blacktop
drive and parking that needs sealer every two years. A bare
open horse barn that I'm trying to clean out, wire and turn
into a civilized shop area. Tractor, Track-Vac, mowers, snow &
sod plows that need restoring, 1960's end loader that needs
restoration and adaptation. Not to mention the hardwood floor
to lay down and the other honey do projects. Made a BIG move of
all the stuff in the picture all by my self over the last year
from the old house to the new old house. That's just a few of
the things that I do my self in my spare time. Organized you
say??? Spend most of my days looking for things that often
times I can't find for months.
But I must have to much time on my hands, cuz I am guilty of
stealing a few hours of sleep out of my typical 14-16 hour day,
seven days a week since March of 2012. Got the pictures to
prove it to John.

Denny,
That sure was a wordy way of saying, "KMA". I don't keep my work space as clean and organized as you because I am a habitual slacker, not because I don't have anything better to do. Reading about your attention to details, regardless of the topic, has motivated me to change my ways. BTW, I'm pretty sure John was poking fun. His comment is more telling of his problems than of yours.

Nothing toughens the skin like constant poking. I'll try to keep it lighthearted.
