I've seen all the under the bed applications from supplliers like Brothers and LMC with fillers in the bed floor, but my customer is looking for something different. Showed me a pic of a truck with the filler neck out the side of the bed in front of the back fender.
I was looking on the Jim Carter site for a gas tank for my personal '54 panel truck when it dawned on me that the filler neck might be in about the right place for what my customer wants. Is it because they don't want the tank in the cab with them. If they get in a bad enough wreck for that to become an issue they are very likely not going to be alive enough to worry about it. (just think about it a little bit) however if they want to move it for more room in the cab or something, that is another story. The filler came out so it just missed the front bed stake. I installed a "48" cab on my "52" so there was no gas tank in the cab. The Jim Carter tank and bracket is just a replacement for a original under bed tank. This looks to me to be a much safer location then behind the rear axle as many under bed tanks are.

| | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 34 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 34 | Brokenhead, a previous owner has already patched up the filler neck hole in the cab. The guy isn't changing a lot from stock on the truck, just little touches like this, a/c, and a drop axle setup.
Bart, did the filler neck catch the bottom of the bed so that you had to notch the wood, or did it exit below the floor line? The one he had a pic of just caught the edge of the floor so they had to fab a guard for inside the bed.

The filler neck comes thru the bed shhetmetal but below the bed floor and is in front of the rear tire. Looks factory.

Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 1,177 | The '48 model had the tank under the bed, and the filler came out the right side of the bed in front of the fender. So a replacement '48 tank with filler neck should do the job. Here's some pics of mine. These should show how it's mounted and how it orients to the bed side, the frame and the bed supports. It comes out right behind the cab and below the bed: original tank with filler neck original tank with filler neck original tank with filler neck filler neck I had a new tank fabricated that incorporated the original filler neck. You may be able to do that cheaper than buying a replacement tank. Just find a local welder. Mind is aluminum, to eliminate rust. new tank | | |
