Leak at oil slinger and hub. Oil is leaking out lugs and around what appears to be seam of hub to oil slinger. Shop manual does not show seal but shows that the two separate? Suggestions please

first thing to do is make sure the rear gear oil isn't overfilled, then you may need to get on to replacing the seals inside, which are shown in the manual exploded view

Hy Duwop, my Bower brg./National seal catalog lists an inner hub seal, National p/n 2081. If I remember correctly, the outer "seal" was a metal plate with a rubber type thin coating on it, hope that helps.

Thanks for your input. red58 in the exploded view the oil is leaking where part7 and part 8 meet and oil is coming out the lugs. So part 1 seal is to keep oil from getting to bearings and all parts inside wheel hub?

it would appear that's the way of it, on the 1/2T the seal is outside the bearing

Hy Duwop, the lube for the bearings comes down the axle tubes from the center of the diff. housing, it drops down into the hub just behind the axle flange and fills the hub with lube. The seal at the inboard side of the hub keeps the oil in the hub, hope that helps.

Thanks 3B I wanted to know how it all works. It's not enough to just remove parts without an understanding as to why and how.

It is as you suggested inner seal is bad. I've not been able to locate new axle flange seals. Mine appears to be aluminum and I don't have a mic to gage thickness. If I'm unable to locate new ones, I was thinking of fabricating new ones from an aluminum can. What ya think do able or not. Oh! An ole wrench bender told me I could even make one from thick magazine cover stock, this I'm not to sure of.

You can use RTV for the axle gasket.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Try this: It's for the 14 bolt, but has the same bolt pattern as the earlier axles.

Thanks Whitedog, after a few trips to parts stores, I came home with the part. For future reference Felpro #55350 is the axle flange gasket.

I found the part stores that rely on computer programs to find parts is unreliable. It did take some searching in the parts books to find the right part. The book showed a pic and provided measurements for comparison, so problem solved. The store (with computer only) did try to help by ordering the wrong part for comparison. When that didn't work and after a two day wait wanted to order another part and delay me another three days with no idea that it would fit.
We have a Federated (Fisher Auto Parts) here and they have the old books and have been able to supply the parts (in stock) for the old bolt and at reasonable prices.
