I was just over at the Greasy Spoon reading about flashing hi-beams to let someone in, and sometimes its necessary to flash headlights in the daytime for the same reason. To do this, I have to turn on the headlight switch, then flash the hi-beams because the running lights are on, but the hi-beams don't work in this mode.
When I'm driving a pre-DRL vehicle, I use the headlights anyway so its easy to flash them.
I'd like to be able to do the same thing in a modern vehicle. Any thoughts?

I've been told that older GM vehicles would kill the DRL if the parking brake was partially engaged. Not enough to drag the brakes, just one notch. At least for now DRL in the US is on a state by state basis. A local fellow was complaining today about GMs mandatory DRL idioicy. He want's to turn his off and can't. Says he doesn't want a nanny, just a truck.

True, they're required in Canada, but I've been in the habit of using headlights in the daytime since my Army days many years ago (the Army has always required it), so I'm willing to take a chance. Hopefully, I'll never screw up!

Otherwise, mine has a momentary switch to flash the DRLs if I wish to do it that way. | | |

That works for flashing others, if thats what your looking for. There is also a proceedure you can look up in the manual that will shut them off but I don't remember it.
I gave up golf for this!

#97662 10/22/2006 6:13 AM | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | On my 99 Bonneville, the DRL can be disabled by pulling a two pronged connector out of a cermaic resistor in the driver's side fender well next to the horn.
To kill the "Automatic Headlights" on my 99 Bonneville, you need to pull the top of the dash out and disconnect the light sensor. Replace the sensor with a 2.2kΩ resistor. The resistor fools the lighting computer into thinking that it's always sunny.
Just remember, keep the modifications to your electrical system simple. You may end up having to put them back some day. | | |
