Had a 283 in a 50 GMC back in the 70,s. Front engine mounts with 3 speed after market shifter on the floor. Used rams horn exhaust manifolds and yes it was a tight fit by the steering gear.Larry

A 55 or 56 left exhaust manifold off of a 265 V8 will let the 283 or any small block chevy mount in the center without moving the gearbox. Many are using the Colorado/Canyon rear to give right width, friendly highway gearing, and stay 6 lugs. I prefer the drum brake early rears but others like the disc brake ones offered after 04 or 05 (guessing here).
