Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone had purchased this kit and installed it yet? It looks like a clean setup for my 56. The CPP website shows them as unavailable (again) - are they just hot sellers or are there production issues?

Thanks.

Just talked to Pete the other day about one he installed on a
55 1st. series. Maybe he will jump in and talk about it.
Short story was that it went in fast and easy without a hitch.

Hi Pete,

Did you use your original steering column? I would like to keep mine looking original on the inside.

Did you buy it from CPP or another vendor?

Thanks!

We used a new steering column, but you can use you're old one .You'll need to take the old one apart and cut it to fit the new box.We did buy it from CPP but there are other places to buy the kit.You will also have to build the brackets to mount the pump. Also they do not include the pump pully because it will depend on where it's mounted.

Dittos here on the CPP stuff. Went in great and steers like a 60's Caddy!

Highly recommend updating all the other stuff; like sway bar, new tie rod and ends, etc. There are a lot more forces at work once it's power assisted.

I used a new column, too; but, as Pete says you just cut your original off and put a bushing in the end of it and get some D-bar and Borgeson joints to mate to the box.

Hi Mike,

I have a new tie rod and ends, new king pins, tapered roller bearings, and a front sway bar. Should probably go for front disc brakes too but would like to keep the original wheels so haven't done that yet. I did put all new drum brakes on and a dual MC.

Was curious why I would need a Borgeson universal joint? I thought the 400 series mounted with the same alignment as the original box so it would only need a rag joint.

At the risk of sounding like a noob (what my teenagers call me), what is a d-bar?

Thanks.

D-bar is the steel stock that is flat on two sides...kind of like a "key-way" for the Borgeson joints to be installed and fastened with the allen bolts in them.

You cut the D-bar to what ever length necessary in order to connect to the
steering column of choice. I used a Borgeson that was splined on the steering box end & D-bar at the other ... then, another Borgeson from the end of the columm
to the D-bar. I needed this set up because I moved my column about
3 inches. Had to move it slightly to accommodate a column shift and clear
the 455 Buick I shoehorned in there! It also cut down the angle of the steering shaft to the box itself.

Hope this helps

Pete,

Please tell us more. What CPP kit did you use? What pump brackets did you build? How did you deal with the column shifter?
Enquiring minds want to know.

regards,
Leon
