back in july i got mater to run,but only with the starter engaged, so i searched and found this old post,

https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=694384

i hot wired it as the old post said to do and it ran great, but it then burnt up the coil, so i got a new ballast resistor and coil and it still does the same thing, i have all the wiring done correctly so what do i do now?

sounds like you may NOT have the wiring correct, there should be a bypass wire [starter to ignition sw to coil OR output end of resistor] that's only 'hot' when the starter is engaged, and a 2nd hot wire to the ignition switch that feeds the input end of the resistor when the key is on [brown wire here] - the symptoms say you're missing that 2nd connection somewhere along the route, the coil fried because it's getting full 12V all the time

i have it wired just like your link shows on the ignition switch, but i don't have the ammeter installed, would that be the missing connection? if so, which wires go to the ammeter?

yes, not having an ammeter wired in could be a problem, you should at least have a wire to bypass it, check the wiring diagram
