The previous owner of my 56 1/2 ton had fitted new brakes to a rear end that is losing greasy oil out of the seals on the end of the tubes!
It looks like you have to pop the halfshafts out from inside the diff to change the seals and my workshop manual is not very clear as to how to do it.
Do you need any special tools? The manual refers to a seal puller and installer.
Many Thanks

It is not very difficult:

Remove rear wheels and brake drums.
Remove differential cover (after draining oil).
Remove lock pin, pin, and spacer block from differential.
Push axle inward toward differential.
Remove C shaped axle retainers.
Pull axle out of axle tube.
Use a seal puller/pryer and remove seal.
Replace seal.
Repeat in reverse order for assembly.

I think I covered all the basic steps and remembered correctly.

Here's some additional info:

Seal puller not mandatory, just be careful not to damage sealing surface. Pullers are inexpensive and you may be able to borrow one from your FLAPS. Put a little lube on seal lip and tap new ones into axle tube. As Dave says it's not that hard. Biggest/messiest task is getting the axles out. Check axle shaft surface that seal rides on for damage/pitting....love the smell of gear lube!

You will find the lube will drain nicely if you remove a bolt or two at the bottom and the fill plug.

Here's a cheap and easy tip for getting the seals out without a puller; After removing the axle shaft from the housing, place it in the seal with lip of the seal locked in the C clip groove. Then swing the axle around to the opposite side of the seal and pry on it with gentle pressure. The seal will pop right out. This trick works on any C clip style rearend.

Be careful not to cut/knick the seals when reinserting the splines of the axle back in.

Great thanks guys it was the getting the shafts out from inside the diff I wasn't sure about, I'm used to early Fords where it is all done at the wheel end.
Took the diff cover off last night and all looks ok.
Good opportunity to count the teeth to confirm what ratio I have.
