So... I let a friend borrow my 1965 1-ton GMC dually (305V6) since his truck was getting worked on.

He called me yesterday just about crying, ran the oil out of it.

So... I guess I will stuff a SBC/700R I have into it.

I know I could dig around and find the info, but this site is so jammed full of experienced experts that I'll ask:

Motor mounts and trans crossmember for this swap available?

Earlyclassicenterprises has the cross member for the trans. I was looking yesterday. The rest should be cake.

Wait... bolters don't cry! Use it as an excuse to make it better. I like your idea of a SBC/700.

Chevy stuff(mounts,xmembers) up to 87 or so will bolt in.

DMG, he was crying because he knows he pulled a bonehead move and hurt my truck... I won't make him pay for anything, but will urge him to help with labor.

I'm assuming there are some factory motor mounts, I'm still snooping around in between clients.

I got a 502 at ricks machine in santee by the drive in. Throw that in your truck. It made 612 hp and 580ft-lbs. a buddy of mine bought it, had it gone through and never picked it up. Might still be there lol

I'm in St. Louis, Hollow, I think the shipping costs would be more than the value of my truck. But it would be fun to surprise Mustangs in a 1-ton dually.

I put a 350/700R4 in my 64.
I originally had a 6 cyl and manual trans.
My original trans crossmount had to come out and I had to pick up some V8 engine mount brackets.
You will have to shorten the drive shaft and mount a new trans crossmember for the 700R4.
Don't forget to wire in the overdrive through your brake system.
Also don't forget the radiator will need to be a bit bigger
All and all not a hard swap.
The wild card in the deck is that mine was a 1/2 ton and you are talking about a 1 ton truck. And that I don't know about.

Do you have any issues with the 700? I heard some people gripe about the o.d. Going out. I've looked at o.d. Trans for my truck but they're like 4-5k. That's about a 1/3 of the total cost of my entire build. Not worth it. Good luck brew.

Thanks Rusty! I'm new to the 'bigger' trucks so I'm not sure but I think the frame rails are the same as the 1/2-ton, so should be the same as what you did in terms of the swap.

Hollow, I know guys running them (700R's) in different configurations and so far I've not heard complaints.

Craigslist here is full of them for anywhere from $100-$400 or so.

The 700 is a great transmission, however, it may be a bit light for a 1 ton truck that's still getting used as a truck. GM didn't use them in anything bigger than the light duty 3/4 ton. There is another option, though; The 4L80E. That one is more or less a TH400 with an overdrive. It was used in 3/4 ton HD models, as well as 1 ton trucks. If you don't mind doing the setup for the PCM, you may consider looking for a decent used 6.2/4L80 combo from a late model truck. Just make sure to get everything that goes with it.

I installed a stock SB350 with a 700R4 in my 1941 1Ton 6,000 miles ago with no problems. With the proper after market mounts and a larger radiator it was a simple job and I am very happy.
I have a 3.73 rear end pushing 7.50X17 tires so I get 70 mph at 2,000 rpm.

A nice modern drivetrain is a nice idea. You can get harnesses to work with it. My brother Did an 88 s-10 with a z06 drivetrain. The harness came as a kit. I think it was a painless conversion kit. It wasn't cheap but it was clean and easy to figure out.

padresag, If brewmeister doesn't have any interest in that crossmember, I might be interested. I have my own unplanned engine and tranny replacement happening. Not sure about it yet, though.
