Would the 6.9 or 7.2 diesel used in the F250 be to heavy for a 51 3600 front end as in would it be any harder to fit then the normal 350 or 351?

Yes & Yes.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Try a 12 valve cummins. All mechanical. It's like the back to the future car. Thing could run on garbage. Bullet proof engine. I believe they are heavy though. Minimal fuel plate adjustment and you double the torque and hp and are still reliable.

The 4BT Cummins fits a lot easier in an AD truck than the very long 6 cylinder Cummins.

As for the indirect injection V8 fords, they're nothing special these days, may not be as nice a swap as something a little more modern.
Not sure on the size and actually fitting one... I bet it's very tight. The front axle will be very well loaded, perhaps overloaded.

Why in the world do you want to put a Ferd engine in a Chevy? Sounds like a lot of work just to prove it can be done.

Kind of what I though on the heavy side.
Just happen to have a 7.2 turbo diesel out of one that is being junked.
It is an International engine Ford just uses it.
The Cummings I know is way to heavy.
Keep in mind the 3600 isn't much heavier then the 1/2 tons.
It still has a running 216 in it right now.

The cummins weighs about 1100 the ford is close to 1300. Both are a lot of weight. The front axle needs to be beefy either way.

4BT is not that heavy, comparable to the Stovebolt.

The 4BT is probably going to be in the 700 to 800 lb range ready to run. That's not too bad all things considered.

I think it's a cool idea. The IH/Ford powerplant is probably a mule of an engine. Slightly on the heavy side. Some updated front springs would definately be in order. Not to mention the steering box will more than likely need to be relocated.

If you're going for that dare to be different category, why not look into a GM 6.2/6.5? They're plentiful and use big-block motor mounts.

Naturally aspirated? Weren't those gutless? My buddy had a diesel suburban that couldn't get out of its own way.

I don't want to jack the thread but the 7.3 is a good motor. Not as good as a cummins but its good. Duramax doesn't last..

If it were me and having some idea just how much trouble (lots) it'd be to install a 7.3 in an AD truck it better be a whole lot better than simply a "good motor" to make it a worthwhile project.
I'd be looking for the best engine I could find with little or only reasonable difficulty to install.

The 4-53T I have in my truck is a great engine, I like it and understand it, but it is just a little longer than fits comfortably in an AD truck. My next swap will be a 3-53T in another Ad truck, that'll be a lot simpler with one cylinder shorter.

Just got back from Field Day of the Past in Rockville Va. Talked to and checked out his truck, 47 Ferd with powerstroke. He is retired from Westerbranch diesel and when asked why all he said is "What does a retired diesel mechanic do in his spare time".Larry
