I read somewhere there was two different front axles on the 1.5 ton a light duty and a heavy duty like the 2 ton. My question is I have a 51 4400 was a dump truck wondering if it had the heavy duty under it? Would like to do a disc brake conversion what would be the easiest?

This is one option without having to fabricate any or many parts.

Light or heavy axle? this is a picture of the 2 ton axle, see that it has a little "hub cap" held on with 6 small bolts.

The light axle has a more normal looking sheet metal cap

Check out Griggs sticky at the top of the big bolt's section. Some really good info and certainly a good choice when it comes to bigger brakes.

Also please check out my option. https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=964265&page=1

Long story short is that I have made a bolt on caliper bracket and hub adapter as well as a bolt on master bracket that uses a vacuum boosted M/C from a 3500HD Chevy.

Good luck with your truck. Any pictures?

You say 4400 which is about 161" wheel base. Looks like might be a 137" wheelbase 4100?
Or with the heavy front axle it might be a 6100.

Not that it matters, you have the 2 ton axle and can swap spindles and brakes if you want.

The number on the title from the vin buster says its a 4400 no plate on the truck , the little box of parts I have 4400 emblems and the wheel base is 137 I quickly threw a tape on it which puzzles me too. Is there any other way to tell? If not ill have a unique 4400 that only u guys will know. Its good to know I have the 2 ton front axle and can do the brakes as u described.

Could be a whole body swap onto a 4100 or 6100, not at all uncommon.
Another option is the frame was shortened, any welds in it?

Looks like you have a single speed rear axle which is most common in the 1.5 ton, so I'd lean toward a 4100. To confirm or deny look up the frame height and thickness specifications and compare to the 1.5 and 2 ton 137" wheelbase trucks. I thought it was in my shop manual for 48-52 and it may be, but I couldn't find it in the 48-51 manual here http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/ might be in another manual or book on that site.

Question is was frame shortened between the axles, or were spring mounts moved?

Shortening the end of the frame for a dump bed is very common but doesn't change wheelbase.

It does look like the frame was shortend on the tall part of the frame right behind the cab. There is a two foot plate bolted to the inside of the frame on each side. Looks like a good weld ill try to take a couple pics tomorrow

Makes me wonder what the history of this truck really is
