I ordered the rubber that fits between the A frame and U bolt that hold the column to the dash on my 38 1/2 ton. The A frame and U bolt are only about a 1/2" wide and the rubber is about 1 1/4" wide and in the shape of a U channel. Any idea why the rubber is so wide and which way does the raised U channel portion of the rubber face? Does the U channel face toward the column or away from the column?

are you sure that U bolt is original? later trucks have more of a 'strap' in a U shape, and that fits in the rubber channel, so the flat side of the rubber is against the column .... might find other 38 owners in the DITY forum or gallery and consult about it

I found the same thing when I installed mine. I put the u away from the column. I thought the u-bolt fit into the u part of the rubber insulator.

If I did it wrong, it seems to work.

I just don't understand why the rubber is so much bigger than the u-bolt, seems like if the rubber was smaller it would fit better. Has anyone found a rubber that fits like I am suggesting?

I guess I'm not sure what part you're referring to. Does this help? It's my '38 coupe.

leveled out my drag link and got rid of the bumpsteer.Also replaced leaking timing cover oil seal. What a day. Im tired. oops wrong forum.

I am talking about the rubber between the column tube and the column support, it wraps around the tube. The one in your pictures looks wore out but the correct to size, the one I ordered is more than double the size/height of the column support u-bolt.

The one at Chevs of the 40s looks to be a tad wide on line but not in the catalog, part number 3685524. The part shown in The Filling Station catalog is part number 60-12A. The catalog shows it to be 1 1/4" wide. You don't say where you bought the part you have but you might give Chevs a call and ask if they can measure theirs for you. I still have the original in my coupe.

I purchased mine at Jim Carters and it is 1 1/4" wide, I will call Chevs of the 40's.

I just went out & took a closer look at my '38. The steering column drop is 3/4" wide and the rubber outside to outside is 1 1/4". It's shaped like ] with the sides being about 1/4" thick. I'm thinking the rubber everyone is buying is likely the same stuff and all they're looking at in the 1 1/4" measurement without taking into consideration the thickness of the sides. Have you tried calling Steele?

This rubber works it just seems like 1" or 3/4" would fit better. Thanks for all your help.
