The '61 ignition switches are different than the 62-66. I tried rewiring a 64 switch (with 5 terminals} to fit my 61 truck (with 3 terminals), but the 64 switch started smoking from the SOL terminal inside the cylinder. :S Any suggestions?

FYI
I cannot replace the key cylinder on my 61 switch because I do not have the original key to pull it out... (I turn my truck on with a screwdriver)

do you have the foot start 235? I think the 3 term switches are from the foot start 235's the 5 terms are for the key start v8 - might find a switch from the earlier trucks - also if you can turn the cyl you should still be able to pull it out, key or not

What does "SOL" on the switch stand for?

I'm not sure what a "foot start" is?
I have a 283, 3 speed automatic in my 61.

SOL might mean solenoid, which would be the START position of the switch. You won't have a "foot start". This was the funny pedal on the floor of the older trucks that you would "stomp" to engage the starter.
