.he is installing 3.73 and posi unit plus fixing some odds and ends.while he has my truck I'm going to get ready to paint my steelies rims red. my question is which spray paint should I use? I want something real durable, that doesn't fade or start rusting a mounth after the paint is applied. they are Rustoleum, Nason, ppg, DuPont and many many more. then they are clear coat with protects the paint but I can't use because im going to rattle can them. and what about primer? should I use a etch primer or a regular primer or no primer. basically all I need to know is which rattle can paint should I use on my rims that's going to stand up to wear and tear and be reliable for at least months? Questions) should I take a scuff pad to them like a red or gray one or sand paper like 400 to them.then use precleano to the rim.mask the rim off then should I A. Primer the rim. B. Use etch primer. C. primer the whole rim. D. Paint the rims

You already seen the color I want. in your honest opinion which type of paint should I use ( rattle can paint only)
And how many coats should I put down?
My last question where can I get some chrome center caps? I'm thinking about doing the rims red with a small chrome center. if I could get a Center cap with a skull or that chopper cross that West Coast Choppers use would be badass. If someone could post a link up It would be greatly appreciated .

I painted some older wheels from my Nissan truck and I really think they turned out nice. It didn't take a lot of prep work either.
1. Clean the wheel to remove all grease rust and dirt. Sandblasting would be ideal but may not be practical. Use a wire brush or better yet, a wire wheel on a drill.

It gives a finish similar that looks like brushed aluminum. I'd say that from a distance of 6 feet you would think they were alloy wheels and not painted steel. This paint comes in different colors but not any primary colors like red or blue. For primary colors, you could use any high temp engine paint or brake caliper paint and then clear coat with this if you wanted. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rll-248929

I talked to a representative at Rustoleum and was quite impressed with their products. They have a rusty metal primer and a rust restorer that gives you a good primed based on so-so surfaces with traces of rust.

1. I used a wire brush on a drill to get rid of the large rust deposits. I also had a grinder but that was far more than I needed.
2. Then got a small wire wheel on a dremel tool, which did a remarkable job in all the tight spots.
3. Then I scrubbed the frame with a stripping pad from Home Depot and mineral spirits.
4. Wipe down with a rag and mineral spirits.
5. Review the entire areas and clean again with a Dremel tool where required.
6. Wipe with mineral spirits and clean with blasts of compressed air.

I am very happy with the results. Look at the photos of my bed replacement in process.

I'll have one coat of rusty metal primer, one coat of primer sealer and I am considering the Rustoleum Automotive Matte finish for the top coat on the frame. They have quite an array of products and seem to be adapting to car and truck hobbyists for easy to use and effective products.

I use the Rustoleum Rusty metal primer also. It levels out smooth & dries real tough. I like Ace hardware premium paint for top coat. There are some good wheel paints out there in different greys but not red.

I plan on using a scuff pad on all the rims. then I'm going to prep them with pre cleanero then spray a lite first coat of Rustoleum on to my rim.then continue till I get three even coats letting each coat dry in between costs. does anyone know if Rustoleum Carries that color red I'm looking for.
