I followed the instructions in the manual: "Insert a wire in the small hole and press firmly while turning the key clockwise", and it still will not come out. Is there a subtle trick to this maneuver? Thanks in advance!

That technique does work. Use a long enough, stiff piece of "wire" - such as, the largest diameter paper clip that will fit the hole.
Spray WD-40 or other penetrating oil into the keyhole and move the tumbler with the key (to distribute the oil). Do this several times.
