For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 | Hi ya'll, I've been fixing up my 59 3g with 9 foot bed. I put in a new clutch last week, now it goes fine only problem is I wanna be able to stop and I can't find rear brake parts. I would love a brake kit that has all the springs and keepers etc. I can get them working if I can find new adjuster for driver side rear. I already have new shoes and wheel cylinders. Are there any other years that are compatible with mine? The rear brakes are 14 by 2 1/2 inches. Thanks for any advice in advance. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 | Well I've scoured the web and all the parts stores. I think I'm gonna change out the whole rearend. I wanted to keep it stock but its got 5:14 gears, can't find all the brake parts and I've got a real nice set of 16" split rim duallys that won't fit over them 14 inch drums. A newer 1 ton axle with taller gears might get it out on the road more often. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 237 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 237 | Good move my 1941 1 ton with 9 ft bed was really slow. I added a new 3.73 rear end being pushed by a small block 350 and 700R4 overdrive transmission. I get 70 mph at 2000 rpm. Tires are 7.50 X 17. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 | I've got a 350 in there already with original sm420 4 speed. Did you swap out the pumpkin or the whole rear end? The junk yard I went to today was not willing to help me find a rear end or a pumpkin to fit it and didn't have line on brake parts. Does any body know what year of 1 ton Chevy rear end would be best to go with? | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 26 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2006 Posts: 26 | hey andy, you got a nice truck there I got one just like it, and I found all the brake parts I needed at NAPA wheel cylinders brake shoes 12x2 for front and 14x21/2 for the back they have brake shoe adjusters too and the rubber brake lines for the front and the one for the back. the only thing I couldn't get was a spring kit. almost all the parts also said made in USA, I couldn't believe it. they must have been on the warehouse shelf for awhile, most parts I can find at a good local parts shop or NAPA find a shop that has the old parts books or just ask the guys on here I can't tell you how many times I have asked if anybody has the parts number for a part, I almost always get the parts number or info on who's got it and where to get it. if you change out the rearend save those big brake drums, I don't think they are easy to get. I believe my reareand is the same as yours but I have a 283 with edelbrock intake and 4barrel carb with 350 turbo auto tranny and 17.5 wheels i think top speed is supposed to be 70MPH at about a million RPM that's fast enough for 54 years old with semi power brakes | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 18 | Hey panmanhd, I found all the brake parts I needed from a fellow stovebolter. I got good brakes now. Put in a 410 pumpkin too. Took her out for a drive. Drives like a caddy! Doors need a lot of work, got new taillights to put on and a couple more small things and she'll be ready. | | |
