I have an 8 volt battery in my 51 chevy pickup. The system is still 6 volt. If I drive it 5 or 6 miles everything is fine until I shut it off. Then it wont restrat. The battery is dead. I checked the generator and it appears to be charging. It is at 7.75 vdc. i am sure this is enough to keep a 6 volt up, but is it dicharging the 8 volt. What do I need to do?

Ditch the 8 volt and put the correct battery back in it. If you MUST use the 8V for some reason, have the voltage regulator adjusted to make the generator produce 9 volts. Then go out and buy a BUNCH of 6 volt light bulbs, headlights, etc. You'll be needing them.

When the engine and starter heat up, the starter looses efficiency and the engine might get tighter.

Check the:

- battery (parts stores will do this for free)

- voltage regulator & generator (a good electrical shop might bench-check these together)

- starter (if you are going to keep your truck for a while, buy a spare from NAPA: about $70).

The 8v battery is an indication that something else in the starting system was wrong, and, instead of finding the culprit(s), a stronger battery was used (a common short-term fix that avoided the real problem).

If you have to buy a new battery, get a good 6v battery, and you should also buy new, bigger, 6v battery cables (2 gauge or bigger - I use 00 (2/0) gauge, simply to eliminate any concern about inadequate cables).

As has been posted many times in the past ( one example ), starting problems are usually caused by:

- weak battery
- wrong-sized cables (I'd bet these are wrong 80%+ of the time)
- weak starter
- poor charging circuit (generator/regulator)

Don't overlook the ground side of your circuit. Many times this is not considered but if the ground side connections are corroded it will increase the resistance causing a voltage drop.
Every connection is a possible slight loss of voltage and while just one is no big thing add them all together and the situation becomes greater.

8 volt batteries are useful when using electronic ignitions. The 6 volt capable systems need a minimum of 5.2 volts. At times a 6 volt systems won't stay above 5.2 while starting.
