They are VERY rare on the 4000 (1-1/2 ton) & 6000 (2 ton) Series trucks. The 8000 & 10000 Series 2-1/2 ton trucks had wider fenders with a flat bottom at the door and they didn't look right without the running boards, so most all of them got them. The fire engine Bill posted a link to is my truck and those running boards were installed as part of the fire service body, not by Chevrolet. ALL LCF's had running boards as standard issue. I'm thinking they somehow bolted the ell bracket that the running board attaches to to the inside step riser, so it's actually bolted to the cab and not the frame, but again...I've never seen them.
