Did these Big Bolts not come with running boards or were they optional?

by 57 the "running boards" were part of the cab, inside the door - the bigger big bolts [above 2.5T] and the LCF's had cabs mounted higher and had external steps

Exposed Running Boards were available as an optional accessory for the 1956 thru 1959 Series 4, 6, 8 & 10 trucks. They are VERY rare on the 4000 (1-1/2 ton) & 6000 (2 ton) Series trucks.

The 8000 & 10000 Series 2-1/2 ton trucks had wider fenders with a flat bottom at the door and they didn't look right without the running boards, so most all of them got them.

The fire engine Bill posted a link to is my truck and those running boards were installed as part of the fire service body, not by Chevrolet.

ALL LCF's had running boards as standard issue.

Wow! Great info. Now my next question is. Since my truck didn't come with them, if I was to locate a set of running boards, will they simply bolt on, or will the frame or body have to be modified? If so, how much.

I've never seen a set, but have to think Chevrolet made it easy for the dealer to install.

I'm thinking they somehow bolted the ell bracket that the running board attaches to to the inside step riser, so it's actually bolted to the cab and not the frame, but again...I've never seen them.
