How do I hand crank to see if it's locked? Not familiar with 235 engine. I see a square hole in main pulley/balancer. What do I attach to, to turn over? Hope it's not the Flywheel teeth. 1959 Panel, 3sp manual w/1961 235 sitting for umpteen years.

A 1/2" socket-wrench ratchet or breaker bar might fit it?

I think it's bigger than 1/2. What do others do?

take the plugs out, tension the fan belt with one hand and try to turn it via a fan blade with the other, if it won't turn that way it's locked - otherwise, yes, prybar against flywheel teeth, should be able to do that thru the starter hole

The balancer has a couple threaded puller holes IIRC are 3/8" coarse. Try installing 2 bolts and rotate with a prybar.

Got it, many thanks. It's free, turns easy with plugs out. Belt was tight enough to turn.

Toyota, who's early Land Cruiser engines look like they had an awful lot of Chevy history in them, actually had an option to hand crank start if the battery was dead.
