The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Do de-rusting gels like Naval Jelly really do anything?

I'm grinding down the frame under my bed and wondering how to attack those corners and areas that I can't get the grinder, wire wheel or Dremel tool into. I tried Naval Jelly to see if it really did anything and it might have accelerated the de-rusting with a stripping pad but wonder if there is something better.

Appreciate anyone's thoughts.

Naval Jelly is Phosphoric Acid, chemically changing the iron oxide (rust) to iron phosphate - available in many forms and in many products - it's more a rust converter than a rust remover, once the rust has been turned black you can carry on with the paint, providing you're not trying to get a mirror finish for a show machine, only other way is to mechanically abrade the piece [grind, sand, chip] down to clean steel, in some places an air chisel might work

I've used it to remove rust from sheet metal. Seems to work beest by brushing it on, let stand 5-10 minutes then taking a piece of steel wool and working it around on the metal. Then wash off and dry....

I wish I saw this before I did most of my frame with a wire brush and dremel tool......

Paint stores carry phosphoric acid which is main ingredient in Naval Jelly which is diluted 3 to 5 times to keep the off gassed acid vapors tolerable.

Phosphoric will work much faster than Naval Jelly. DO NOT get it in your eyes. Wear chemical safe goggles.

If you use phosphoric you will want to be in open air and with a fan. If in garage you will not only need but WANT a respirator with acid gas cartridge.
