That being said, it sounds like you have a good basic circuit. Are all your connections clean and tight, are your cables the proper size for the voltage you are working with, six volt cables are twice as large as the twelve volt ones you find in the auto parts stores. In addition to the ground from the battery to the transmission, there should be a large ground connection to the frame (chassis), and other smaller ground wires to the cab, and front fenders, and the box or bed or deck. You can't have too many ground wires, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 101 | today I replaced the ground strap from the battery to the transmission. I added a ground wire (4g) from the battery neg terminal to the frame and another (4g) from the starter to the frame. Still slow crank. I pulled the starter and will take back to the place that just did the rebuild. I heard today that you could use a 9v battery and get better results. ?????

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | 8V not 9, but forget that, "better results" can be had with 6V in a good system, 4 gauge is 12V wire, 6V should be 1 ga or heavier, using 0 or 00 is really best, and make totally sure every place you connect ground cables to is clean shiny metal, and it's best to use an external tooth star washer on them, make it dig in so there's zero resistance at the connections

If you are saying it shows 12.4V on a volt meter, that is not telling if it breaks down. Use another Bat to try if you can. Be real sure it's a "good battery" before continuing.... and proper size cables as mentioned.

| | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 101 | took the starter back to the shop, he had overlooked and there was a short inside. Fixed and put on, changed the extra ground from 4G to 0. Replace the old started cable as well. Bang, running great.
Now I need to work on the slop in the steering.
