I have been applying WD-40 for the past week and it does not want to unscrew, any suggestions on how to removed it without damaging the finish?

If you don't see a metal insert it's a push on. My '38 coupe is a push on. Maybe sometime in the past it was glued on?? The OEM knob is black rubber and you can get repops both threaded and push on.

Any of the vendors will have it. Below are those listed by Chevs of the 40s. All of the vendors will have them. The screw on says four speed but it will work for a screw shaft three speed. They normally don't have the shift pattern on them. Push on Screw on
