So it seems that the carter w-1 carb used a different throttle linkage than my 1953 truck.

So it probably is that carter w-1 was used in 1948 (my engine) and then switched to Rochester for my truck(1953).

The linkage does not match up as it looks like the PO just bent the throttle linkage on the carb to make it fit. Otherwise the connection is too high and the engine would race.

Does anyone know if the throttle rod that connects to a carter carb is pretty much the same just shorter?

Same throttle rod BS. If it don't fit then it's a W-1 for
something else or someone jerry rigged the rod. I've swapped
Rochester 'B's for W-1's on several trucks and the geometry is
identical for both.

I wonder if those Carter's that use the flat bar to the float assembly is what should have been used.

Some throttle rods are set up for a heat spacer under the carb & some are not.

My problem is the spacer would need to be extra thick for the throttle rod that is on it to be used.

I will need to look at that rod again.

Probably save myself some time and just make my own linkage with some heim joints and stock

Yes so this is what I think is the issue I have a 574s (actually two when I go dual carbs)

notice where the throttle will connect to
574s at 5 o'clock
684s at 3 o'clock

I think this is the one that must have been on the motor originally 684s

Mike said unfortunately W-1 could have anything on them as they get swapped around a lot.

Looking on ebay I notice a few of the carbs have the throttle connector bent like one of mine - so I will just make a rod with heim joints. Will be a bit more secure (than a hole and cotter pin) and still "Made in the USA"

Nope I was wrong again!- I am such a novice. And again my wife is right always telling me "Start with the obvious".

Seems my pedal was getting hung up on the old felt pocket on the floor board and not returning fully.

Expanded the hole and new felt and any w-1 carb will fit now.
