See pictures of truck as it is, untouched from factory. Thanks, Joe Steering 1 Steering 2 | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | you mean mostly untouched the dash top is slightly darker and purposely flattened to reduce glare, the column is the same as the rest of the gray inside, except the floor - the lighter is called marble gray, the darker is Charcoal ... don't know of any modern codes to match them Bill | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 | Yes Bill, more accurately it is mostly untouched. I was speaking of the darker gray on the top. Well it is VERY touched, just not a complete repaint. The light gray - Marble - on the lower portion I plan to get from Jim Carter. I was also thinking about his rattle can dark gray for the top, as it is supposed to be a splatter finish. So is the column, that is dark gray also, the same Charcoal as the top dash but not flatten? I'd be inclined to take a sample [like the e-brake handle] to a store and get it matched and add some flattening agent to it for the top

The problem with carter is you don't know what to use with the paint. They have no data sheets with it.

I set an email to Jim Karras, who is listed on the link as a contact. Will let you know if anything comes out of it. Also, contact Bob Adler (shop in NY) and he was kind enough to send me a lot of info from his database but he too states he does not have an answer for the dark Charcoal. | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 | Jim Karras sent a copy of the factory color chip sheet for 1959 trucks. It lists DUCO 73605 as the interior Charcoal. I have seen this mentioned elsewhere but I think the problem has been that its actual 'recipe' is not known. Will try to follow up on this with paint shop around here. Is there a way to attach files such as Jim's PDF chart or Bob's Excel shet of his database? | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | If DUCO 73605 is the code, this thread gives additional code: Charcoal - DUCO 73605 (Dupont DS174) Silver Metallic - DUCO MM313 (Dupont 94162) The Ditzler (PPG) code that matches the above code is shown on this page. You can call the PPG Color Library to see if they have an original formula, or an "offset formula" (for a matching color), or a modern formula from on original paint chip. 1-800-647-6050 might still be the Color Library phone number. If LonnieC sees this post, he might have a PPG phone number that recently worked for him. | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 | Some additional clues: TCP Global, Ditzler DL-31557, 1957 Interior Dupont History Site, DUCO 73605, 1957 Interior Chip Dupont History Site, DUCO 73605, 1959 Interior Chip Dupont History Site, 1956 Truck Interior Text Dupont History Site, 1957 Truck Interior Text Dupont History Site, 1958 Truck Interior Text Dupont History Site, 1959 Truck Interior Text DUCO 73605 was said to cross over to Dupont DS174 - but one onwer tried it and said it was too light Dupont DS174 Have send request to TCP Global for their insight to this question. I am trying to get the shop owner to do this. Problem is he is in CA and I am in PA. But if I do get him to do this and it turns out well, I will be sure to get the info we need to replicate. | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 29 | Well some potentially good news on the mysterious Charcoal gray. I have been working with Jim Wells at TCP Global in San Diego. I was surprised to find that with the room full of color charts back to horse carriage days, they did not have this color ready to go. I sent him the shift rod that was in very good shape color wise. They have used it to create the Charcoal and the paint and parts are on the way back to the shop. When it goes on I will get the shop to tell me how well it did and hopefully they can take a pix (remember, I'm in PA and the truck is in CA I will post the results and if it turns out well, the details. | | |
