I pulled the original steering column from my 61 Chevy Pickup and am replacing with a tilt column from a 67-72. I am not sure I have the wiring connected correctly.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

It should,t be too much problem. You could get wireing diagrams for both models or trace the wires. The 67-72 connector is better. A wire off the stop light switch goes to the turn switch & connects to the rear stop/turn lights. The front turns go to the front lights & dash ind. lights. If you have a specific problem discribe it & we,ll try to help.

I have a '68 tilt column in my truck. Should have ( 8 ) wires in harness. Black=horn, Lt. Blue=LF turn signal, Dk. Blue=RF turn signal, Brown=Hazard Flasher, Purple=Turn Flasher, Yellow=LR Turn signal, Green=RR Turn signal, White=Stop light switch. There may also be an additional wire to the small light bulb at the shift indicator.

Do you know where I could find a wiring diagram for the 61?

I've got the diagram for the 67-72.

Is it as simple as matching color for color from both? (Did GM use the same color codes?)

Britcon shows this as the white wire. When the turn switch is not on & the brakes are applied curent from the stop light switch goes through the turn switch to both stop/turn lights. When the turn signal is turned on it interrups & flashes the coresponding light. Understanding this helps diagnose the problem. I believe the colors are the same. I,ll look tomorrow when I,m at the shop.

Here is what I understand that I need to do.

My stop lamp/light switch has two wires running to it from the wiring harnass. One is white and one is orange.

I will need to split a new wire from the white wire and run it to the white wire going into the 67-72 column wiring. Right?

Please let me know if I understood this correctly.

Also there is a gray wire that is a lone wire coming from the 67-72 steering column. Where does this wire go? What does it do?

I,m not shure what you mean but the white wire needs to go from the stop light switch to the turn switch. The late model connector is the best. The grey wire is for the light in the shift ind. There might be a place in the fuse box to plug it in or wire it to one of the dash lights. It should dim when you turn the knob on the headlight switch.
