I think we've found the tie-rod ends we need, however I still need to locate a compatible single-piece drag-link, and the upper steering column bearing.

Does anybody have a 64 GMC Master Parts Catalog they can look these up in. I've had zero luck finding replacement parts, even sending the parts to a couple of places to have them visually check.

I need to find some way to cross reference them to at least a bigger pool of trucks that I can look for in junk yards.

We also purchased the upper steering wheel column bearing (bushing) for the consumer truck but it's about 1/8" too small for this big truck.

This is a manual steering setup if that could make a difference.

Hy donnoman, I think the upper mast jacket bearing p/n might be 2455324 the parts book says it is part of a control assembly, possibly the turn signal switch. The drag link p/n is 2388963, that number superceded 2388955. The following alphanumeric code followed the part number in the parts book,#L-24-VU-405-A-11, that might be the part number of the part manufacturer, I hope that helps some.

Hy donnoman, I checked one of my maintenance manuals, it looks like the upper bearing incorporates the horn wire.

@3B can you tell me the title of the catalog you got the numbers out of?

Any chance you could take a picture of the sheets and email/post them for me?

Hy donnoman, the parts book I got the info from is X-164001, it is a huge book covering over a decade. I'll see if I can get it apart and copy the individual pages.

Well unfortunately I've struck out on both counts.

I resorted to sending the old drag link to a 4x4 shop in hopes they could custom build a replacement, but no joy. I'm going to have them ship it back to me, maybe I'll try another 4x4 shop.

I haven't found a place that says they can build a Drag Link for a Class 8 truck. The OEM parts are long gone, there's no compatibility matrix that I've found.

The information I located was that the drag link p/n is 2388963, that number superseded by 2388955. The following alphanumeric code followed the part number in the parts book,#L-24-VU-405-A-11.

The truck is at a shop, the shop has exhausted all of its contacts and parts houses. I've sent inquiries to all of the northern ca salvage yards, and either got a polite no, or just no response.

I thought the upper mast jacket bearing p/n was 2455324 from http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=25259

I found somebody who had it, we ordered it. It doesn't fit either.

I'm surprised you can't find a modern replacement drag link and or the ends and a sleeve to make one? Or at least find best you can and ream the pitman arm and steering bell crank to match the tapers of the drag link ends you can get.

If looking up part numbers is a dead end start looking by dimensions.

As Grigg stated above do a search by dimensions. First identify the degree and lenth of the taper in both the pitman arm and the steering arm. If they are the same you can remove the pitman arm pretty easy and take it to a parts store where you can use it to find ends that fit well. Once you find ends that fit buy one with left and one with right hand threads. Then get your self a piece of DOM tubing the appropriate Length and diameter. The length of the tubing should put you at about 3/4 of the way on the threads of each rod end with the wheels straight and pitman arm at its center of travel. Have this tubing threaded for the the ends you bought put a split in the each end and get the proper clamps. If you build your drag link like this the exact length is adjustable and you should never have trouble centering your steering wheel.

As above but before making a threaded drag link sleeve look to buy one new or scrounge one off something else. You may save some time, money, and aggravation if it happens to be already available.
