I think I have some kind of tranny problem, I have a 59 3800 1-ton with a stock 283 and a turbo 350 auto tranny, with a lokar floor shifter, the truck starts up fine and will go into every gear I can't get it to 1st and 2nd because of my big custom bench seat it runs down the road fine and shifts into all gears, the problem is when I turn it off it makes a loud bad sound, like something is binding up, I tried turning it off in reverse and no sound, but sound in netural, park and drive, when it got warmed up I got sound in all gears, not as loud as in park. I disconnected the lokar shifter thinking it wasn't adjusted right and tried it it still made a bad noise in park, it sounds like a starter when its not shimmed only louder I have no mufflers on the truck right now so I can hear it over that exhaust noise when I turn it off I can't figure it out the flywheel and torque converter look fine the starter gear is off the flywheel when I turn it off so nothing I can see is hanging up, anybody ever have this problem, I understand noise when you start up but not when you turn it off??

sounds like an internal problem to me, if you're sure it's not the engine making the noise

im not sure of anything the motor never made that noise back when I had the stock 4speed in it the motor is rebuilt and im getting 60lbs of oil pressure all the time

The one thing I would check is loose flexplate bolts. Pry the flexplate back and forth and watch for movement without moving the crank.

Maybe check the torque converter bolts to see if they are loose.

I would unbolt the converter and slide it back and see if you still have the noise.

ok the loud sound I was having has been discovered, it sounded like the starter drive gear not coming off the starter ring gear, I got the truck started and got under there I had my son turn it off at first I didn't see anything but hear the loud sound we tired it again and I saw that after it started to turn off the starter gear popped out and partly engaged the ring gear I never could see it at first but that was it, I came to find out that it was doing that because of the wire from the alternator to the switch was still hot after I turned it off and it was causing the starter to reengage I figured this out because when I disconnected the wires from the alt it stopped doing it problem solved I had a connector that I used on an old 57 buick that I rat rodded, it connects to the plug that goes into the alternator, it has a diode in it that keeps the juice running the right way and not kicking back, i found it put it on and bam!no more noise and everything was charging like tom petty sings even the losers get lucky sometimes!
